A Man of Infinite Energy and Love for Chinese Language

Director of the Confucius Classroom 

at Zaporizhzhya National University in Ukraine

弗拉基米尔∙彼得洛维奇∙沃尔科夫教授，身材魁梧、高大、健硕，学识渊博，精力充沛，和蔼可亲，看上去根本不像70多岁的老人。他是乌克兰著名的教育家，曾任扎波罗热国立大学副校长，获得过乌克兰总统签发的教育部功勋奖章。2018年光荣退休后，他欣然接受了学校返聘，担任乌克兰扎波罗热国立大学孔子课堂首任外方院长。虽年逾古稀，他仍积极努力工作，为孔子课堂的建设和发展，殚精竭虑，四处奔波。

Professor Volodymyr Volkov is tall, strong, affable, and full of energy and wisdom. At 70, he does not look his age at all. As a well-known Ukrainian educator, he used to be Vice-Rector of Zaporizhzhya National University (ZNU) and was awarded the Order of Merit from the Ministry of Education issued by the President of Ukraine. After retiring from a successful career in 2018, he was invited to serve as the first Director of the Confucius Classroom at ZNU. Despite his age, Professor Volkov has been working tirelessly to build and develop the Confucius Classroom.

走进沃尔科夫院长的办公室，你会感受到一股浓浓的中国文化氛围。桌子上插着中乌两国的国旗，墙上挂着中国山水画、花鸟画，天花板悬挂着来自中国的红灯笼和中国结，柜门上贴着京剧脸谱和各种字体的“龙”字。他的办公桌旁还挂着一块黑板， 每天他都坚持练习写汉字，最喜爱写的是“春”字。沃尔科夫院长一见到客人，就会向他们展示他的书法，并认真地书写一个大大的“春”字，向客人推介奇妙的汉字书法艺术，夸耀中国的大美山川和文化历史遗迹。

Upon entering Director Volkov’s office, visitors are greeted with a strong Chinese atmosphere. On his desk stand the national flags of China and of Ukraine; on the walls hang Chinese landscape and bird-and-flower paintings; from the ceiling dangle red lanterns and Chinese knots, and the cabinet doors are adorned with various Peking Opera masks and calligraphy scrolls of the Chinese character 龙 (dragon). Mounted by his desk is a chalkboard, on which he practices writing Chinese characters every day. One of Director Volkov’s favorite characters is 春 (spring). He would show whoever comes into his office his works and demonstrate how he writes the character with ink and brush, all the while effusive in his praise for the art of Chinese calligraphy, the beauty of China’s great mountains and rivers, and its history and cultural heritage.

自扎波罗热国立大学孔子课堂创建以来，沃尔科夫院长就利用他广博的人脉，不断拓展孔子课堂的教学空间。

Since the establishment of the Confucius Classroom at ZNU, Director Volkov has been using his extensive connections to expand the teaching activities of the Confucius Classroom.

扎波罗热有尚武之风，于是沃尔科夫院长主动与该市武协联系，谋求设立孔子课堂，最后签署了合作协议，并将课堂设计为“汉语＋武术”的模式，一边教武术套路、太极拳，一边利用武协教学点教授汉语知识，传播中华文化。该市图书馆有一个读者协会，沃尔科夫院长就跟图书馆联系，在读者协会开设汉语学习班，将孔子课堂拓展到广大市民中间。在扎波罗热国立大学体育系，他创建了运动康复专业，利用孔子课堂专职体育教师，为全校学生免费开设太极拳课程。一时间“学习太极，强身健体”风靡全校。扎波罗热州有一个能源城，那里有很多中乌合资企业， 当地人对学习汉语有强烈的需求，沃尔科夫院长就在那里建立了汉语教学点，吸引了数百人学习汉语。也是在他与多方的努力下，扎波罗热市郊区巴拉宾斯克的学校将汉语作为重要的第三外语和学分课程，使它正式进入幼儿园至十一年级的学习课堂……

Seeing the local people’s love for Chinese martial art, Director Volkov took the initiative to contact the Wushu Association in Zaporizhzhya and convinced them to jointly build the Confucius Classroom. The two sides finally partnered up and formed a distinctive Chinese teaching model, under which the Chinese classes could teach Wushu techniques and Tai Chi while the Wushu Association could teach its members Chinese language and culture. Director Volkov also contacted the reader’s club in the Zaporizhzhya municipal library and set up a Chinese language class there for the wider public. He helped launch a sports rehabilitation program at the Department of Physical Education at ZNU and invited full-time physical education (PE) teachers of the Confucius Classroom to give the university students free Tai Chi class, creating a “Tai Chi” fitness craze on campus. Zaporizhzhya Oblast has an energy city, which is home to many Sino-Ukrainian joint ventures. Tapping into the local people’s strong demand for Chinese learning, Director Volkov set up a Chinese class there and attracted hundreds of people to sign up. Thanks to his efforts, a Balabyne school, which is located on the outskirts of Zaporizhzhya, has made Chinese an important third foreign language and a credit-based course for students from kindergarten all the way to the eleventh grade.

沃尔科夫院长，虽已年逾古稀，但依然精力充沛，精神矍铄，在传播汉语和中华文化的事业中，他事必躬亲，竭心尽力； 在发展和建设孔院的过程中，他默默耕耘，无私奉献。

Director Volkov, despite his age, is briming with energy and spirits. He has made the dissemination of Chinese language and culture a personal calling. He joins many unsung heroes toserve and build the success of the Confucius Institutes worldwide.
