The Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the four most important traditional Chinese festivals. Celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar, it is also known as the “Moon-Worshipping Festival” and the “Reunion Festival”. On this day, the people will admire the full moon, eat moon cakes, and pray for family reunion and happiness.

Moon Worshipping and Moon Appreciation

The Mid-Autumn Festival originated from moon worshipping, one of the important rituals in ancient China. Ancients would set up an incense table under the moon, lay out the offerings, and then begin the sacrifice. By now, the originally solemn ritual has evolved into relaxed moon appreciation.

Mooncakes

Mooncakes are mostly round in shape, made by wrapping various fillings in a crust. Originally being an offering for the moon, they have now become a holiday food and gift for relatives and friends. There are many types of mooncakes in various parts of China, among which the Cantonese-style and Suzhou-style mooncakes are the most famous.

Appreciation of Sweet-scented Osmanthus

The Mid-Autumn Festival coincides with the season of full blossom for sweet-scented osmanthus, which is known for its persistent fragrance. The Chinese often enjoy its flowers, drink wine, and eat foods with this special flavor on the occasion.

Looking at the Moon and

Longing for One Far Away

[Tang Dynasty] Zhang Jiuling (673-740)

Over the sea grows the moon bright;

We gaze on it far, far apart.

Lovers complain of long, long night;

They rise and long for the dear heart.

Candle blown out, fuller is light;

My coat put on, I’m moist with dew.

As I can’t hand you moonbeams white,

I go to bed to dream of you.

Translated by Xu Yuanchong (1921-2021)

The Mid-Autumn Festival

Tune: “Prelude to Water Melody”

[Song Dynasty] Su Shi (1037-1101)

How long will the full moon appear?

Wine cup in hand, I ask the sky.

I do not know what time of the year

It would be tonight in the palace on high.

Riding the wind, there I would fly,

Yet I’m afraid the crystalline palace would be

Too high and cold for me.

Translated by Xu Yuanchong (1921-2021)

A family reunion under the full moon on the Mid-Autumn Festival is often considered perhaps the most supreme happiness imaginable for the Chinese people. For those away from home, the sight of the bright moon may not incur the sense of stranded loneliness and forlornness felt by the ancients, yet the cool breeze will inevitably awaken nostalgia deep down. Although a “bright is the moon over the home village”, an “encounter with friends on a distant land” is just as worthy of celebration, and “toasting under the bright moon” is just as merry.

On the occasion of the Mid-Autumn Festival, let’s quietly tell our wishes and hopes to the moon. The moon fairy must be very busy tonight, but your message will surely be getting through.
